Worry Less, Pray More.

I used to think that worrying was a natural part of life. It is, but if it isn't controlled, it can also be a very unhealthy experience.

Stop worrying so much! Has anyone ever said that to you before?

I remember a conversation I had with a friend a few years ago. I told my friend that she was worrying too much about her life. She got pretty upset about my comment, but it was true—she really was worrying too much.

And the funny thing is, so was I.

I once heard someone say that we are least tolerant of the negative traits in others that we ourselves possess. I believe that.

I told my friend that she was worrying too much about her life, but I failed to look in the mirror to see what I was worrying too much about in my own life.

Worrying has been a constant struggle of mine. I occasionally find myself overanalyzing situations and worrying about things that are out of my control.

I worry about my future. I worry that I'm wasting time. I worry that I'll never be successful. I worry about my finances. I worry that I’ll never get married and start a family of my own.

The list could go on and on. And every single time I worry, it doesn't solve anything. In fact, it just makes me feel bad about myself.

A couple of years ago, I asked a friend what he does when he feels overwhelmed with worrying and situations that are out of his control. I'll never forget his answer.

He simply said, “Maggie, I just don’t give situations out of my control my time.”

We may not be able to control every situation, but we can always control what we choose to focus on. It doesn't make sense to worry about something we can't control.

Lately, I've been studying the book of Joshua. After 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, the Israelites were finally able to enter the promised land. And Joshua was the one who led them there.

During those 40 years of wandering, though, the Israelites worried about many things. But despite their moaning and groaning, God had a plan for their lives and He provided for their needs every step of the way.

Just as God provided for his people throughout the Bible, He wants to provide for us today.

“Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?" - Matthew 6:25-27

Worrying is like pulling a hand grenade and throwing it on yourself. It won't just explode on you, but it will also explode on everyone around you.

Worrying doesn't add a single hour to your life and can rob you of your happiness.

So, what do you do?

My friend said it best, don't give worrying your time. When you catch yourself worrying, call your thoughts out like you would call out a friend who's acting out of character and flip them with the backing of scripture.

The conversation in your head should go something like this:

"My finances are never going to turn around."

No, they will! Philippians 4:19 says the same God who takes care of me will supply all my needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to me in Christ Jesus.

"I'm wasting time with my life."

No, I'm not! God promised in Proverbs 3:5-6 that if I trust Him, seek Him for understanding, and acknowledge Him in all my ways, He will direct my path.

"No one will ever love me."

Not true, I'm already loved! 1 John 3:1 says the God who created the entire universe loves me, and I am His child. No man/woman can ever love me like God.

Calling your thoughts out and flipping them may be a challenge in the beginning, but eventually, you will build mental muscle and recognizing when your worrying will get easier.

Don’t take life too seriously. Worry less about the small things—they’re all small things.

Worry less, pray more 🙏.
