Keep Watch and Pray.

Keep watch and pray

I'm terrified of squirrels.

For the last few years, I've been terrorized by a couple of squirrels that lurk around in the 7-inch gap between my bedroom window and screen. And these aren't your average squirrels!

They get to the gap through a cutout on the screen that was made specifically for the A/C.

In the summer, my window has to be kept open for the A/C to fit securely through the cutout. The squirrels then squeeze their bodies between the A/C and screen (this amazes me) to get to their hangout spot in the gap.

In the winter, my closed window stops the squirrels from getting in my room. But the only thing that stops them in the summer is two flimsy plastic doors on the left and right side of the A/C.

My bed is very close to the window, so I feared that one day the squirrels would come in my room and jump on me while I was sleeping. And this was a legit fear because they already chewed through portions of the plastic doors.

I had a process though. When I heard them, I would jump out of my bed and bang super hard on the window to scare them away. This was the quickest way to get them to leave.

Early October, I realized that the A/C was still in my window. But, I never got around to taking it out.

A couple days later, I woke up to the sound of a squirrel squealing in my window. I tried to ignore it, but I couldn't. So, I sat up in my bed to prepare myself to bang on the window.

I looked at the window and didn't see any squirrels. Less than a half of second later I realized why...

One of the squirrels was on the wall beneath my window...IN MY BEDROOM! My heart almost jumped out my chest.

I screamed, and the squirrel started going crazy. It was scared too and couldn’t figure out how to get out my room.

Thank God that it eventually found its way out. And you better believe that I took the A/C out that day, so I could shut my window.

I was randomly thinking about the squirrels this weekend. They always come early in the morning when I should already be out of bed. I don't even need an alarm clock because when I hear them, I jump up as if someone's about to kill me.

Instead of getting my day started with that dose of energy, though, I get back in the bed after I "fix the situation."

I thought to myself, "What if the situation that I've been wanting to change for years has been set in place to change me?"

It's amazing to me that the squirrels only come at the time I need to get up. And when they come, they give me the energy I need to get my day started early. But, I typically just go back to bed.

Maybe God is trying to use the squirrels to teach me discipline. And since I wasn't getting the message, He allowed something drastic to happen, like a squirrel coming in my room, to wake me up.

Sometimes it takes crazy things to teach you a lesson. The God who blesses you is the same God who will let a squirrel run wild in your room to get you to pay attention.

God promised to never leave you nor forsake you, but He didn’t promise to make you comfortable.

What if the very situation you're trying to change in your life is what God is trying to use to change you? To prepare you. To develop you. To make you stronger.

If you keep putting effort into something and it's not changing, it's because it's meant to change you.

I'm reminded of the Matthew 26:36-46. Jesus went to pray in Gethsemane and asked a few of his disciples to keep watch. Every time he came back, he found them sleeping. He was trying to prepare them for what was about to happen, but they couldn't keep their eyes open.

"Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!” Jesus said (Matthew 26:4).

God may be trying to prepare you for what He's about to do in your life. But even with a willing heart, temptation can cause you to want to take control.

Physical needs can overpower your desire to obey God if you don't stay spiritually vigilant. Keep watch and pray.

Can God trust you when He sends a squirrel?

Challenge: Read Jonah 4:1-10. What situation in your life could God be using to develop your character? As always, I'd love to hear from you. Head on over to the discussions page where interesting convos can happen.
