Do You Have Spiritual Posture?

My roommates and I got robbed when we were in college.

After freshman year, two of my friends and I decided that it would be more cost-efficient for us to move off campus. So, we rented a place that was walking distance from our school.

We thought we were "winning" because we only paid $350 a person to rent a 3-bedroom townhouse. The only issue was that our college was in one of the worst areas of Atlanta, which meant that our townhouse was also in one of the worst areas of Atlanta.

But, we went an entire semester without anything bad happening and we were convinced that the area wasn't as bad as people said it was.

When our school closed for Christmas break, one of our friends moved in for a week and my roommate from Michigan had two of her best friends from home come visit. We had a full house—six people were staying there, including me.

Since my roommate had friends in town, we wanted to make sure they experienced the Atlanta nightlife. So, we decided to go to Club Miami. It was one of the best clubs, at the time, for college students.

Before we all squeezed into my roommate’s two-door Mitsubishi Eclipse, I locked my roommate's dog, Mia, into the bathroom so she wouldn't make a mess on our carpet while we were gone. Mia wasn’t house trained yet.

As we pulled up to Club Miami, my roommate got a call from our next-door neighbor who we were very friendly with.

"Melissa, Mia's outside!"

"Wait, what? Are you sure?" Melissa frantically responded.

This wasn't possible. I personally locked Mia in the bathroom, so even if she magically got out, there's no way she would be outside.

"I think someone's in your house!" My neighbor said after seeing a shadow of someone walking around inside.

After he said that, we all started freaking out.

Instead of parking, we made a U-turn and headed back to our house. When we got there, our door was open and we found out that we were robbed.

The people who broke into our house (we assumed it was more than 1 person) stole 6 laptops from us, flat-screen TVs, iPods, and literally everything that was expensive and portable.

They cleaned us out! And we were devastated and scared.

I was thinking about that robbery as I was reading the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego last week. If you don't know the story, it's found in Daniel 3.

King Nebuchadnezzar made a giant gold statue in the province of Babylon and ordered everyone to bow before it when they heard musical instruments being played. Anyone who disobeyed his order was to be thrown into a blazing hot furnace.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego oversaw the province of Babylon and refused to obey the order. They trusted God with their lives and were willing to be thrown into the furnace for their faith.

They believed that God was able to save them from the furnace. However, in verse 18 they said, "But even if he does not, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up."

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had spiritual posture. Whether God would save them was not as important as the fact that God could save them.

Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire? ” They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.” He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” —Daniel 3:24-25 (NIV)

God came through for them. Even if the fire miraculously wasn't burning them, and it wasn't, it was impossible for the bound men to be loose and walking around.

Someone physically let Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego loose from their chains just as someone physically let my roommate's dog loose from being confined in the bathroom.

And there's only one person who could do that…the Son of God. The same personal God who can loose the chains in a blazing hot furnace is the same God who can loosen you from whatever you're battling.

People may come to rob you, but God is here to loose you. Do you have spiritual posture or you allowing others to dictate your faith and keep you bound?

As always, I'd love to hear from you. Did you get anything from today's message? Head on over to the discussion page on the blog.
