Are You Available?

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me." - Revelation 3:20

True love doesn’t just require sacrifice, it requires availability.

I have this friend who often comes over my house to hang. I live in a very old brownstone that doesn’t have a living room, so we always hang out in the kitchen.

Every time I get up to grab something from the refrigerator, cabinet, or wash a dish, my friend stands up too and waits until I’m finished to sit back down.

Maybe I’m uncultured or something because It seemed a little odd to me that he does that, so I asked him about it. His response was priceless.

He said, “I just want to be available to you if you ever need something.”

Wow, I take it back—it's not odd at all.

Imagine if we had that mindset every day. Imagine if we just made ourselves available to be used by God.

I remember listening to one of T. D. Jakes' sermons a couple of years ago, and he said something that I’ll never forget. He said, "You're praying for success, but God is looking for sacrifice."

Ouch.

I’m ashamed to admit that over the last 8 years of my post-collegiate life, most of my sacrifice was for me and my dreams, not for God.

I sacrificed spending time with friends, buying things for myself, and even sleep for my vision, but not for God. I was a serious doer, but I wasn't doing the work of a serious believer.

God is always here for us. The least we can do is be here for Him.

There are days when I spend hours in the zone working on "do good" projects, but when God calls me to drop everything to do something for Him, I'm guilty of trying to make it fit my schedule instead of adjusting my life to His calling.

Doing good things for God when it’s convenient isn't a substitute for being available for His use when it isn’t.

I had a friend tell me one day that she couldn’t make it to service because on her way there, God placed a woman she met on the street on her heart. She wound up going to the lady’s house and encouraging her—right on time.

My friend could’ve easily ignored God’s call and went to church, but instead, she decided to be the church and be available for what God needed her to do.

True love always requires availability.

God just wants you to be ready for use when He needs you. Are you available?
