Go Back Home.

Updated: Jan 12

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10

I used to think that avoiding problems would make them go away, but now I know that it often just makes them worse.

When I was about 5 or 6-years-old, I wanted to run away from home. I must’ve gotten in trouble for something I probably didn’t do (just saying), and I thought my parents were mean.

Running away was the best solution in my little mind. So I grabbed my plastic arts and craft suitcase and filled it with all the necessities—toys, books, and stuffies.

I had everything I thought I needed to run away.

My journey away from home lasted a whole 5 minutes before I wanted to go back. It was the middle of winter, and I was cold and hungry.

I tried to run away from my problems, but I realized that I was worse off on my own.

Over the past few days, I’ve been thinking about the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 19. After God did a mighty act through Him, Elijah was afraid for his life and fled because of a threat from Jezebel.

For 40 days and 40 nights he traveled to Mount Sinai, and then spent the night in a cave. While he was there, the Lord asked him what he was doing there.

Elijah ranted about serving the Lord zealously and how the people of Israel wanted to kill him. So God told him to go out and stand before Him on the mountain.

As the story goes, the Lord passed by and a great storm hit the mountain, but the Lord wasn’t in the wind. Then there was an earthquake, but the Lord wasn’t in the earthquake. After the earthquake, there was a fire but the Lord wasn’t in the fire either.

And after the fire there was still small voice, the voice of God, who asked Elijah (again) what he was doing there.

You see, Elijah was in the wrong place. He was so overwhelmed with fear, doubt, and worrying about his life that he failed to focus on the purpose that God created Him for.

He needed to go back.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10

“What are you doing here?” I've been meditating on that question lately.

I don’t know about you, but there have been many times when I’ve been like Elijah—in the wrong place. There were times when I tried to run away from my problems to avoid confronting them instead of letting God use me in the midst of them.

But God is greater than our fears.

Go back home today to the heart of God. He is your strength and will be with you through every challenge. Don’t trust your feelings, trust God.

If He’s tugging at your heart to do something, and you’re running away from it, go back and trust God. He is greater than your heart, greater than your fears, and greater than anything you could ever imagine.

Go back home.
