Keep On Keeping On.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

- Isaiah 41:10

There was a season of my life in high school when I was running track and competing on the step-dancing team. I would finish step practice around 4:30 pm, and then rush over to track practice.

I was drained. Every muscle in my body ached, but my step team only had one more competition before our season was over.

“Only a few more weeks!” I would tell myself, “Two practices a day are almost over.”

The day came for the last step competition, and I was fired up. My step team often came in 1st place at the major competitions, so I was confident that we would do it again.

But as my team and I were performing, something I never expected happened … I tore my hamstring. I guess my body just couldn’t handle the extra strain of running sprints and "stepping" every day.

I didn’t know what to do.

I was in excruciating pain, but we were in the middle of our routine and I didn’t want to be the cause of my team losing. So I kept going.

“Lord, please help me get through this,” I whispered to myself.

I finished the routine to the best of my ability and waited to hear the final results before I told my mom to take me to the hospital. We came in 2nd place.

Although we didn’t win the competition that day, I learned a valuable lesson: to succeed, you have to push through the pain. I had a legitimate reason to give up that day, but I didn’t want to let my team down.

I didn’t know that I tore my hamstring at the time, but I knew that whatever injury it was, it would heal. I also knew that I would never be able to compete with my team again because I was graduating — it was worth pushing through the pain.

As I was thinking about that experience recently, I realized how much it relates to our everyday lives. There are times when we have a heartbreak or pain so great that we feel like we can’t go on, but that pain too will heal.

The plans that God has for us is worth pushing through temporary trials.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

- Isaiah 41:10

I was watching the movie, Harriet, this past weekend, and was amazed at how much they emphasized the power of prayer in Harriet Tubman’s story.

She found comfort and strength in prayer during trying times. And God guided her every step of the way.

During a storm, you too can find comfort and strength in prayer, and in the promises of God found in the Bible. He will never leave you or abandon you.

Pain will eventually heal and storms will come to an end, but as for now, you must keep on keeping on. As I say often, everything won’t always be okay, but you will be as long as you keep your eyes on God.

Keep moving forward, keep praying, and don’t give up.
