Let Your Light Shine.

"In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." - Matthew 5:16

I used to think that I was letting my light shine by telling people about all the good things I was doing. Now I know that my life should be living testimony, not just my words.

A man came up to me in a coffee shop yesterday and asked if I can help him get food. I was waiting for the lady behind the counter to make my ginger tea when he approached me.

I told him yes and asked him what he wanted to eat. There were only muffins and danishes in front of me, so I pointed to a muffin and asked him if he wanted one.

"Yes I'll take a muffin, but if I'm honest, I would prefer a coffee."

"No problem at all!" I said.

When the lady came back with my tea, I asked her for a coffee for the gentleman. She gave me an unusual look as if she were saying "why are you buying this man a coffee" with her facial expression.

When she came back to the register with the coffee, she packed a danish in a bag and told me to give it to the man too—he wasn't paying attention to what she did.

I smiled at her and handed the man the coffee and danish. He said, "God bless you," and left the shop.

When the lady rang me up, she didn't charge me for the coffee or the danish. Maybe the look that she gave me when I ordered the coffee wasn't a why-are-you-helping-this-man look but maybe she was surprised that I was actually helping him.

I didn't know what to do. Should I mention something to the lady about the good deed, thank her, or just pay?

I sensed she didn't want to make a big deal about it, so I thanked her and walked away.

As I was walking down the block, I thought about what had happened and how good of a heart the lady had. May God bless her for the good deed that she did.

I don't know whether the lady knew God or not, but I found myself thanking God for her and asking Him to bless her for being a blessing.

"In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." - Matthew 5:16

When I joined my sorority in college, I didn't want to wear paraphernalia every day as many people did. In fact, I didn't want to nalia, what we call it, at all.

I was just as excited as all my sorority sisters were to finally be allowed to wear our sorority's Greek letters, but I didn't want to be defined by my sorority.

When you become a member of a sorority or fraternity, people tend to label you by the letters you wear. I wanted people to make a decision about me by my actions, not by my sorority.

In the same way, God wants us to let our light shine so people will see our good works and come to know Him. He doesn't just want us to walk around with #teamJesus shirts, but He wants us to be team Jesus through our actions that reflect His love,

"Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” - John 13:35

Letting your light shine can be as simple as saying, "you're doing a great job" to a worker at a store or encouraging someone who's often overlooked. Whatever you do, do it in love and to the glory of God, not to feed your ego.

Every time I consider posting on social media about something good that I've done to help someone, I ask myself why I really want to post this. If it's just to get a few likes, I stop myself because it's not about me, it's about God who's working through me.

When you're truly shining your light for God, you won't need worldly validation.

Helping someone in need and leading someone to God by your actions will be reward enough for you. And because we have a good good Father, He'll surely reward you even beyond that.

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

- Luke 6:38
