The Obstacle is the Way.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

— Hebrews 11:1

I used to think that obstacles held me back from the dreams that God placed in my heart, but now I believe they prepare me to receive them.

A few years ago, I heard about a study that a group of scientists conducted with a mouse.

They placed a piece of cheese on an enclosed table, put a glass in front of it, and put a mouse on the opposite side of the glass.

For the first few days, the mouse smelled the cheese and tried to get it. But every time the mouse would attempt to get the cheese, it would just hit its head on the glass.

After a few days of the same thing happening, the scientists removed the glass and noticed that the mouse would smell the cheese but would no longer try to get it.

The barrier was removed, but because the mouse failed multiple times at attempting to get the cheese, it stopped trying and died.

That study is a perfect analogy for the obstacles in our lives.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

— Hebrews 11:1

Many people often quit when they hit barriers that are put in place to test their faith. They attempt a few times to pursue what they hope for, but when they fail, they give up like the mouse—even after the barriers are removed.

They let their dreams die with them.

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” – James 1:2-4

Obstacles and trials will come—that’s a promise—but when they do, trust God to get you through. He uses obstacles to grow our faith.

At times, many of us (myself included) want the cheese to be handed to us. But the truth is, we often value the most things that don’t come easy.

God wants you to be completely dependent on Him so that when He works a miracle in your life, the credit will be given to Him alone. That often means that He needs time to work on your heart.

But when you get to the place of total dependence on God, He will exceed your expectations. So have a little faith.

Don’t give up when you hit an obstacle. It’s not just about you.

God has placed dreams and desires inside of you to fulfill at an expected time for the building of His kingdom. He wants someone to come to know Him as Lord and Savior by your testimony and life.

You don’t have to physically see what you hope for in order to believe it, but when you believe what you don't see and work toward it, eventually you'll see what you believe.

Be patient. Be persistent. Be resilient, and always keep moving forward because more often than you realize, the obstacle is the way to victory.
